Confidence, Independence & Curiosity!
We believe that experience-based learning focuses on practical, real-world activities, supporting your child's education, rather than relying solely on traditional classroom teaching. This approach is especially valuable for children with SEND, as it encourages active engagement with their surroundings. Through hands-on tasks that involve applying what they have learned, children build practical skills and develop greater confidence in their abilities.
Independence is also a vital part of every child’s development. Hands-on learning experiences encourage children to make choices, solve problems, and take appropriate risks within a safe and supportive setting. For example, giving children responsibility for their own learning resources and allowing them to choose activities helps build a strong sense of ownership and accountability. This can motivate the child and their curiosity as they explore and make sense of the world around them. Experience-based learning supports this by providing engaging resources and meaningful opportunities for exploration.
What hands on learning do we provide?
At Lincoln Inclusive Tutoring (LIT), our children and young people take part in a diverse range of hands-on learning opportunities including:
Cooking, supporting the development of practical life skills, fine motor coordination, and independence
Community outings, helping children build confidence and independence in real-world environments
Work experience, giving children opportunities to explore their interests and prepare for adulthood
Crafts, encouraging creativity, self-expression, and the development of fine motor skills
Together, these activities promote meaningful, experience-based learning that extends beyond the classroom.
At Lincoln Inclusive Tutoring (LIT), we are partnered with Little Crafter Boxes (LCB) to provide craft boxes for our children and young people. These boxes are carefully designed to support hands-on learning, encouraging creativity, fine motor development, and problem-solving skills. By using these craft activities, our learners can explore new materials, follow instructions, and express themselves in a practical, engaging way. This partnership allows us to make learning both interactive and enjoyable, while reinforcing important skills in a fun, sensory-rich environment.

How can hands-on learning improve focus, boost self-esteem, and create meaningful progress beyond the classroom?
Improving Focus - Hands-on learning can have a powerful impact on learners with SEND as it naturally engages multiple senses such as sight or touch, which helps children and young people stay present and attentive. Rather than listening passively to instructions, they are actively involved in manipulating materials, following steps, and solving problems. This multisensory engagement helps strengthen their concentration and attention span over time. Because the tasks are tangible and goal-oriented, learners can see immediate results of their effort, which reinforces sustained focus.
Boosting Self-Esteem - Completing a cooking task, a craft project, or a real-world activity like a community outing provides a visible result of their effort, fostering a sense of accomplishment. When tutors celebrate these successes, no matter how small, it reinforces their belief in their own abilities. The independence involved in these activities (making choices, managing materials, or solving problems) also contributes to a stronger sense of self-worth, as children and young people recognise that their decisions and skills have value.
Moreover, these experiences create meaningful progress beyond academics, helping learners develop life skills such as problem-solving, independence, and decision-making. This approach prepares pupils not just for exams, but for real-life challenges, equipping them with the confidence, practical abilities, and resilience they need to thrive in everyday situations and future pathways.
Next Month’s Blog: “Building the Next Chapter for Lincoln Inclusive Tutoring”
Exciting changes are underway at Lincoln Inclusive Tutoring (LIT)! Our name will be changing slightly as part of our rebranding, and we are thrilled to announce that we are expanding from Lincolnshire to a nationwide service. A new website is coming soon to reflect our growth and make it easier for families and professionals across the country to access our inclusive tutoring services.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support so many children and young people with their SEND learning needs. This expansion allows us to reach even more pupils, continuing to provide tailored, one-to-one tutoring that supports academic progress, personal development, and confidence-building.
At LIT, we remain committed to being more than tutors - we are mentors, advocates, and champions for every child’s potential. This rebranding and nationwide growth marks an exciting new chapter as we continue to help children and young people thrive.
